Afterglow 86 is an arcade racer from a night drive in 1986 that never ended. Neon roads, a sun that never quite sets, a car computer that talks to you in green terminal lines. Drift through the bends, fill your boost, tuck into a rival's slipstream and knock them into the wall.
It runs in the browser: no download, no account.
Three worlds, nine stages
Twin Grid, Downtown Run, and a rain-soaked boss race against Nova.
The Moon: Tranquility and the Sea of Rains in low gravity, then Vex on an orbital ring.
A wireframe cyberspace: The Grid, the Data Stream, and the Phantom at the end.
Win stars to open the next world. All ten cars are open from the start, each with its own speed, grip and drift.
Keyboard
- W or ▲ gas, S or ▼ brake
- A D or ◀ ▶ steer
- SPACE drift, SHIFT boost: both together for a boosted drift

Turn it sideways. The gas is automatic: hold the left or right half of the screen to steer, hold into a bend and the car drifts through it, and let go for a burst of boost. Or steer by tilting the phone.
New to it? The Driving School walks you through drifting, boost, drafting, overtaking and takedowns, one lesson at a time.
- Drifting that fills the boost meter, and a boost that burns it
- Drafting: sit in a rival's slipstream to fill up
- Takedowns: ram a rival hard, or into the wall, for boost
- Three rivals on Easy, Normal or Hard
- A boss race at the end of each world
- Time trials and free runs on every track you have opened
- Is it free?
- Yes. No ads, no account, nothing to buy.
- Do I need to download anything?
- No. It runs in a modern browser with WebGL, on a computer or a phone.
- Does it work on phones?
- Yes, in landscape, with touch or tilt steering. A computer gives the smoothest frame rate.
- Can I use a controller?
- Not yet: keyboard or touch for now.
